founder/CEO @ Rapchat | always learning

TLDR

2020 was a wild year across the board so I’ll spare the generic recap of the Black Mirror episode we all played a part in 🤣. In fact for that, I recommend the 2020 special on Netflix cuz it’s truly delightful.

On the personal front, I felt like it was a pivotal year for me. I learned a ton in so many different areas and made significant progress towards being the dude I want to be. Of course it did not come with challenges — dealing w/quarantine, business challenges, cabin fever, girlfriend and I living/working on top of each other…

Note: this was originally published on my WIP Stay Ballin newsletter that’s going to be focused on the founder journey and things that I learn along the way. If you want, you can can check it out here .

A few years ago, one of my friends showed me a way of working that was centered around a timer that was set to 25 minutes which is widely known as the Pomodoro Technique. And in case you’re wondering wtf a tomato has to do with it, Pomodoro means tomato in Italian haha.

I don’t know all the science behind it…

I started working on Rapchat as a Junior in 2013 at Ohio University. The first (awesomely shitty) version went live to the iOS app store June 2014 right after I graduated. While it pained me, I had already accepted a job offer at Progressive Insurance to be a Systems Engineer so I moved to Cleveland and the data center at Progressive that houses billions of dollars worth of servers and equipment became my home.

The job was pretty insane. The concepts I had to learn were beyond complicated and like most other jobs, nothing in college came close to preparing…

One of our main goals at Rapchat is to enable anyone to easily record and share a quality song from their phone. And to date, we’ve helped over 7 MILLION people record songs which have generated over 600 MILLION plays.

Beyond that, we’ve witnessed Rapchat connect millions of artists around the globe from 160+ different countries who collaborate remotely, build friendships, and interact with top artists like Meek Mill and MGK through our challenges. Not only have we seen the product evolve but the community too which helps thread the entire ecosystem together.

We truly believe that we’ve become the…

Context

I grew up in Westerville, which is a suburb of Columbus. I went to Ohio University in Athens then moved to Cleveland to get a “real job” working IT at Progressive Insurance. I held that job for all of 8 months only to quit because Rapchat was blowing up. I moved to Chicago to get into an accelerator and instead got accepted into 500 Startups in Silicon Valley. After 500 and a year hanging out there, we made a 2-month pit stop in LA on our way back home to Columbus. There’s a saying out there that all Ohioans eventually…

After Christmas, Morgan and I went down to Belize for a quick getaway. I believe it was last October when we started spontaneously tossing the idea out of going somewhere after Christmas (work was crazy for both of us and a reset at the end of the year seemed like a great idea).

Turns out lots of other people do this too 😂. Finding somewhere to go for a decent price was nearly impossible. Luckily, I stumbled upon a site called SkyScanner which enables you to search from your departing airport to “everywhere”:

Which is how we landed on Belize…

Writing this one from our beautiful spot in Belize where my girlfriend and I are unwinding for the next few days:

Our goal at Rapchat has always been to give people around the world the ability to create music from their phones while connecting with others around the world. Whether you’re an artist, producer, or someone that just wants to have fun with friends — we want to provide you with the tools you need to make something awesome and we could not be more proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in pursuing that goal. To date we’ve:

  • Generated 200+ million plays across creations
  • Enabled people to create 50+ million raps
  • Consistently ranked top 50 in the app store…

Like I do every year, here’s my attempt to wrap-up the year w/things I did and things I learned. 2018 was crazy on so many levels and one of the most impactful years I’ve had yet. …

Now that the new Studio is live on iOS and now Android, we’re excited to announce ANOTHA set of features coming your way. This update focuses on improving the browsing experience for beats and also gives all our dope producers a place to finally shine in the app with their own producer profile.

Here are some of the cool new thing you’ll see in the app:

Beat Collections

Our goal with beat collections is to group beats together that fit a similar vibe or follow a similar theme. …
